refactor(util): let convertToDateObject take an empty value (#1419)

convertToDateObject already gave null for null and for an empty string,
but its type took only a Date or a string, and undefined reached the day
parser and threw on trim(). React and Vue keep an unset date prop as
undefined, so they checked each value before calling it: six checks in
React, twelve in Vue. The helper now takes null and undefined as well
and gives null for any empty value, so those checks can go. The calendar
spec pins undefined, and js/tests/types both new types.
