tests: migrate root package tests to testify

The root package tests mixed standard testing package
patterns (t.Fatal/t.Error) with testify assertions, creating
inconsistency within the codebase. Other packages (uuid, pool,
decimal, crud, datetime, queue) were already migrated to testify.

This change completes the testify migration for the main test
file, replacing t.Fatal* with require.* and t.Error* with assert.*
for consistency. Also removes unused imports (strings, reflect)
after migration.
