refactor: fix use of % vars inside gettext call.

Had constructs like:

  _("some string" + "other string %s" % "subst")

change them so string substitution is not inside the _() call and
remove + since string concat works inside _() without any operator.

   _("some string" "other string %s") % "subst"

This allows pygettext to extract some strings it was barfing on
otherwise and cleans up the code.
