math_expression: expose validity and answer has_variable lexically

has_variable consulted the compiled symbol table, so it could only answer
for an expression that compiled - and a caller wanting to know whether the
text mentions a variable usually wants to know precisely when it did not.
It is now a lexical query over the expression text and answers either way.

Adds valid() so a caller can distinguish "compiled and has no such
variable" from "did not compile", and documents error() as being about the
last compilation.
