Drop xdoctest (#2383)

* Rewrites the doctests in order to render `xdoctest` unnecessary.

### Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

Yes. `xdoctest` is now removed from the dependencies.

### Other information:

`pytest` introduced a regression that is affecting the doctests. Be
warned that running them with `pytest` v9.1.x will absolutely fail.
