docs #294 clarify forward() contract and backend library requirements (#301)

Document that forward() may return one or more solutions and that a
single-element list is valid.  Add backend library requirements section
to the solver-writing guide: rotation chain, forward/inverse, and UB
calculation are inseparable capabilities that the backend must provide.
