Merge master branch into storage-config-ui (#1855)

## Problem

The feature branch `storage-config-ui` has been running in parallel to
master for months already. Getting out of sync little by little.

## Solution

Merge the changes from `master` into `storage-config-ui` solving all the
conflicts.
