Make sure pmap on tests rethrows error. Compatibility fixes for v0.5. (#508)

* reinstating dependency on Calculus

* fixing error made deliberately to test tests

* now correctly handles parallel errors

* removing kwarg invalid on master

* replacing slice --> @compat view

- addresses deprecations in move to v0.5

* import Base.shape

- implements fix in #506

* making sure _rand!, etc. accept Vector and Matrix

- if not, calls for multiple random values will fall through to defaults

* version-dependent shape import

* fixing version issues

- for v0.4, export shape
- for v0.5, import shape

* compatibility fixes with v0.5
