Prevent desktop caliban crash if file can't be saved (#194)

* try/except statements for writing the file upon saving

If the file can't be written for whatever reason (eg, disconnected
data volume), don't raise an exception--otherwise work will be lost.

* more informative exception handling

- still don't want to accidentally crash caliban if saving goes wrong
- removes blank except in favor of providing more information
