Apply ignore patterns in subdirectories too

I fear the code here is not precisely correct; I suspect I ought to be
always passing the basename to fnmatch and then pruning directory
contents if there's a match.

Oh well at least it's a bit better than before (and, like always, I have
no time to make it perfect).
