Add ability to hook into word completion to allow display customisation

This change improves flexibility for customising word completion.
Users can listen for word completion events and specify how to
display completion suggestions for the currently edited word. For
example, to display completion suggestions as a list before the
edited line or as a menu below the word being completed.
