Fix issues highlighted by staticcheck

I was not handling all errors in tryTLSOnConn(), so that's good to expose.  I
had copied from stdlib a bit of testing pattern which called Fatalf (ie
FailNow) in a go-routine.

And lint ignore some confusion over "A" as a capitalised article vs "A" as a
DNS RR-type.
