Refactored branching on async in checker (#200)

This patch refactors the code in `_checkers` module to make it more
maintainable as branching on sync/async functions introduced a lot of
code duplication.

This is also necessary to allow for easier creation of violation
messages if they are again refactored to a DRY function.
