Fully functional version of cache

* couldn't figure out how to generate a single cache object in package namespace for memoised leaves function
* was getting check errors about accessing a destroyed cache
* switched instead to managing my own cache
* and generating the cache object via a memoised function (conditioned on cache dir)

This approach means

* can switch cache dir dynamically
* no invalid names / objects created during package build issues
* only concern is what path testthat uses and whether we need to make persistent disk cache optional
  to avoid e.g. travis issues or just out of concern for filling user's disk
