Commit Message

This fixes the memory leak in issue #520. It's somewhat at the cost of memory performance, because it requires copying every string column into memory when reading a table; however, this was already the case on Python 3.  At some point it would be nice to develop a better workaround for that but it's outside the scope of this issue.
