Replace compare(a, b) with !diff(a, b).length

This provides more flexibility via the custom `diff` provided as
optional argument to createPatch(...) entry point, but potentially
causes a performance regression due to non-lazy comparisons.

Addresses recent discussion in issue #15: namely, using a custom
diff to handle Date instances properly, specifically in arrays.
