Commit Message

Code and docstring changes to show more of how attention works.

Details:
  - Adapt docstrings to better fit our norms elsewhere in codebase.
  - Change a few variable names to work hand-in-hand with docstring
    explanations.
  - Remove asserts: either replace with if + ValueError or rearrange code
    so the asserts would no longer be load-bearing.
