Drop Python 3.2 support in favor of unicode

The goal is to support Python 2.7 and Python 3 with the same codebase.
We need unicode literals, so the options were:

 * Use literal u"unicode strings" and drop Python 3.2 support.

 * from __future__ import unicode_literals, leading to compability
   problems in doctests.

 * Differentiate between Python versions in the code.
