Remove extra `malloc` from `kRing` (#322)

* pass on docstrings for kring functions

* one argument per line in many-argument functions

* optimism

* use `calloc` and NULL instead of 0

* bigger benchmarks

* remove old commented-out function

* revert to original benchmarks, as the large ones i added were expensive

* deduplicate some code
