allow bytes to be passed through http client (#689)

* allow bytes to be passed through http client

HTTP client currently assumes all payloads are JSON serializable objects
but there are instances where a schema for the payload may not be
possible, e.g., where the sender is a 3rd party whose payload can be
serialized by a 3rd party SDK and forcing a schema may not be a great
alternative.

* fix breaking benchmark test
