add mbf schema for xml ingest

also added a nice pattern for determining if it is ok to unpack a list
of length 1 into its contents or return None instead of the empty list

the default behavior is to only proceed with the change if the schema
provides us with information to make the determination, if there is
not enough information then no change is made
