Fix BitField behaviour for fixed position fields

Previously BitField would fail to allocate hierarchical fields with
fixed position because it would allocate all fields simultaneously.
This is fixed by:
 - Assigned all fields with fixed positions first
 - Then assigning all remaining fields

Additionally, BitField can be subclassed and when called will return an
appropriate type.

Minor spelling fixes and changes to the tests.

Incorporates suggestions by @mossblaser.
