minor #1110 code grooming (kalessil)

This PR was submitted for the 1.6 branch but it was merged into the 1.7 branch instead (closes #1110).

Discussion

code grooming

- default value hidden in else branch
- array casting equivalent structures
- not optimal if conditions
- array_keys/array_values as foreach array
- slow alter in foreach
- strlen usage for empty string check

In spite of positive experience with all changes I wouldn't include this into release, but rather next one.
