Abort on command errors

Note that the naive unpacking syntax

         $a, $b = $args
         & $a @b

delivers inconsistent results depending on the length of the $args array:

        $args.length    outcome for $b

        1               $null
        2               scalar value
        3               an array

which in turn, leads to inconsistent behaviour when splatting @b.
