Fix `line_plot()` to work with `nan` in meta columns (#187)

* extend `line_plot` test to fail with `nan` in `meta`

* add function `join_meta` for line plot with `nan` in unused meta columns

* appease stickler

* make test fail correctly

* check that kwargs for `join` columns are strings

* always join `exclude`column (for testing)

* add to release notes

* make `as_pandas()` take dict for column discovery
