Fix "++ operator" uses in Python code

Python doesn't support the ++ operator to increment values. Instead "+=
1" is used now. Used as prefix, "++" didn't cause any syntax error, but
also didn't increment. Because the erroneous locations were only
updating return status information, no actual errors were produced by
this.
