This doesn&#39;t, or no longer, appears to serve any purpose, other than
bloating the file.  Maybe there&#39;s an argument about efficiency but, as
we see in c41fc58, there may be tradeoffs with correctness since we&#39;re
more error prone.

Probably should have gone out in 79ccfb9.
