Don't override `context.data` when the connector provides a function
for updating the context data.

Move the code applying updates from persist hook to a better place.

Revert an incorrect change of a test file made by the pull request
we are trying to fix.

Rename `data` to `dbResponse` and add comments explaining the structure
of the response object for more clarity.
