Python interface: Only warn and return NaNs

Instead of raising a RuntimeError, only issues a RuntimeWarning and
return NaNs when the called conversion function returns with an error.
This prevents `numpy.vectorize` from failing and the user can deal with
the returned NaNs.

Updates the tests accordingly.
