Conslidate coercion to constructor

And use boolean natively in conditional instead of `== false`

The "DoubleNegation" style intends to apply to conditionals, but
this is a deliberate coercion of uncertain type to a boolean.
This case is supported by the Ruby style guide, so try not to get hung
up on it.
