speeding up PCOMPs with a pivot table
 - a pivot table lets us turn the PCOMP 3-D (ntimes, nelements*nlayers, nresults) into a 4-D (ntimes, nelements, nlayers, nresults).  We end up with nan's, but we can slice the data in a much nicer way.
 - doing all the times with one call instead of many (just for PCOMPs)
 - doing all the max's with one call (the same call)
