chore: Modified code to work with recent versions of angular and angular material.

Angular 5 now requires importing rxjs typescript bindings. Angular Material now uses Mat (mat-) prefix.  Also discovered a regression in the latest rxjs and Angular 5 that required pinning the version to 5.5.2 until the problem is addressed.
