cPickle.dumps is treacherous in python 2.7

Calling cPickle.dumps in Python 2.7 doesn't necessarily produce the same
result every time, so it is an error to expect the same dump for the
same data.

This commit adjusts the tests so they compare the original data, not its
pickled version.
