Improve Python 3.6 compatibility

- Starred arguments have a different AST syntax tree in Python 3, with
  a Starred node and keyword node without an argument name, rather than
  starargs and kwargs fields
- Avoid deprecation warnings in unittests when using assertRaisesRegex,
  create a wrapper method to expect SyntaxError by default
