Use gettempdir()+'/pld/' as default location for disk cache

Before, we used to write to /tmp by default, which has two problems:

1) It's easy to write a ton of files into /tmp/, so things like
directory listings become very slow and awkward.

2) gettempdir() is better in that it's cross-platform and it allows
the user to override through environment variables.
