unifier: reduce memory usage

Change a couple of loops over (usually large) data structures of alleles to
free the input incrementally during iteration, reducing peak memory usage.
This makes several unifier functions have the side effect of clearing an
input, slightly perilous but worth it since unifier memory usage is one of
our scalability chokepoints.
