rework `node_sets` (#381)

## Context

Fix: #380 #313

## Scope
- merge `NodeSet`, `_NodeSetBase`, `SelectionNodeSet` into one class.
Simpler to handle. Less confusion.
- remove `_ranges_overlap` and `_ranges_vec_overlap`. They may even be
bugged. Fix: #297

## Testing
- the previous classes were already tested. Now all tests are for the
same class. No additional testing is required.
