Try and switch mpl backend before running GUI

If currently using a GUI matplotlib backend, attempt to switch it to `tkagg`. This will either succeed, or fail with an ImportError which we can catch, annotate and re-raise. This prevents multiple event loops running at the same time, which will likely cause an unrecoverable crash.
