Chore: update dependencies and more

* I recently went through parts of the list of stale and closed issues.
I found several interesting questions that we missed, and came to the
conclusion thi stale policy was not a good idea. The stale.yml was
standard and simply deleted.

* I updated go to the 1.24 version, and the test suite kept passing.

* I go mod -u ./... and the test suite kept passing.

* I finally modified the workflows so they use go 1.24.
