Validator: detect extraneous properties

Provide an explicit option to control whether extraneous properties
(that is, properties that aren't described by the schema) are permitted.
Currently, this setting is all-or-nothing for any particular `validate`
operation.

Also, lift error/result messages out of subresults, so that callers
can return a good-enough error message by accessing `rv.message`.
