Fix ruby 1.9 incompatibility. Closes #6

Ruby 1.9 and higher call to_ary on every object when a flatten of the array is executed. This will fix an `Error: requested unassigned attribute to_ary from ...` error. Check [this article](http://tenderlovemaking.com/2011/06/28/til-its-ok-to-return-nil-from-to_ary.html) for more background information.
