Split up the synchronous and asynchoronous logic

Our consumer test file was over 1200 lines, which felt unwieldy. We split up
some of the methods into separate files so that we could split up the tests,
which has made them a little easier to grok.

They're still ridiculous, though.

And proxy logic isn't tested.

... Yay.
