Fix stateless channel metadata parsing.

Preliminary benchmarking confirms that Avro throughput when using
stateless tranports is virtually equivalent to JSON (and likely others),
most of the overhead is in creating connections. Using stateful
transports has vastly superior throughput (>10k QPS for "Human" schema).
