Emit error on duplexes if carrier closes
This is a change in behaviour - before, we'd just end and finish the duplexes.
With this change, you have to handle the error but
(a) You don't get eos even though the other side didn't end the duplex
(b) You are aware if the carrier goes away before you managed to finish
    the duplex
