Fix #13: Check file exists before attempting to read

After creating a time series instance an IOError ('IOError: [Errno 2] No
such file or directory') can be triggered by attempting to read the
series before any data has been written. This commit checks that the
file exists before reading and returns an empty series if the file
doesn't exist.
