Avoid str in Calibrator constructor (#3536)

### Summary

Revise `Calibrator` constructor, to avoid declaring a `str` `mode` which
is not actually reachable.

### Details and comments

This was originally part of #3440 - thanks to Thierry for spotting. I'm
including it as a separate change to have `Calibrator` in line with the
new-style programs and having it correct from its public release,
leaving the adjustments to server-side primitives as part of the other
PR.
