Move unit tests (first 4 packages) to pytest (#3477)

### Summary

Move four modules in `unit/test` (`accounts`, `api`,
`backwards_compatibility`, `debug_tools`) to pytest.

This includes:
* one tweak to the `registry` marker for specifying the class: it now
requires to use a kwarg, as otherwise mypy would not recognize it and
this way we use it properly while still usable.
* bumping `pytest` version
