Revise client-side primitives tests preparing for pytest (#3418)

### Summary

Revise the client-side primitives tests with changes towards `pytest`
and some refactorings:

* focus on bubbling up functionality to single functions in each file,
to prepare them for becoming fixtures
* focus on avoiding `setUp` (by making use of the new functions, and/or
preferring assigning inside the tests for simpler items)
