feat: support react 18

react moves from dependencies to peerDependencies, where a react
library belongs: as a hard dependency on 17.0.2 an app on react 18
ended up installing a second copy of react under this package. The
range keeps 17 as well, and the suite passes against both.

react 19 is left out on purpose. It ignores propTypes, which both
components here rely on, and react-test-renderer is deprecated there.

The example switches to createRoot, the root API react 18 expects.
