Updated test function to use difflib library instead of custom written diff implemenation (#1641)

* Update compare_files to use difflib instead of custom diff implementation

* Update gitignore to ignore generated actual.diff file

* Update to only write output files if test fails

* Add expected output file path to error message

* convert diff to list immediately, skipping loop

* Move comment to more locial location

* Update docstring

* Convert windows style line endings before comparison
